Medicare rebates
Medicare rebates up to 12 sessions are available for clients who receive a referral to a Mental Health Plan from their GP. Clients will need to book an extended appointment with their GP in order for the GP to assess for a mental health diagnosis and subsequent eligibility for Medicare rebate.
If eligible for a Mental Health Plan, clients can assess up to 12 sessions with a psychologist per calendar year. After the sixth session, the GP will be provided with a summary of progress and if required, a further six sessions can be recommended. Under exceptional circumstances, a GP may determine if a client meets specific criteria and will then authorise a further six sessions, allowing for up to 18 sessions for one calendar year.
Private Health rebates
Please contact your Private Health Insurer for details about your level of cover for psychological services. No referral is required to claim Private Health rebates. However, some Insurers may require that Medicare rebates are utilised prior to Private Health rebates. Please contact your Private Health Insurer for clarification.
